Estar is used in a temporary moment, ser for a long definite period of time.
It’s very obvious to use it for profession for instance: yo soy un maestro.
I would say you are right @Elfilisofo if someone would say this sentence in most cases they would use “estar”.
“ser” you would use I think if someone’s personality trait is to be impacient.
It’s an inherited characterism you have and in everything you are doing you are giving up too easily or do it very hastily and you’d ask people to describe you they’d say: you are an impacient person. Necesitas ser más paciente.
I think the example would be easier to understand if you use the opposite: tu es tan impaciente siempre (you are always so impacient)
Whereas you would apply “estar” to a temporary moment.
When someone is not impacient all the time but in a single instant like we all are sometimes.
I don’t know if this completely correct, but this is my way of understanding it

I think there is some subjectivity and mind set at play with some choices between estar and ser. For example one question is “eres rica” but you could use the other. I suppose it depends if one feels there is a permanancy to rich-ness and what level of rich-ness one has in mind when considering that.
I agree that pacience is likely viewed as a general trait of permanance one ought to build up. But I suppose it depends on the context. Someone could mean, at this moment, be more patient.
And so the same could be said for calm.
I just try to remeber which one is used in the question as I am not sure there is any better way to write the question. I think as long as the concept is understood then the goal has been achieved.

“ser” vs “estar
I am sure that “ser” is correct here, but in another vocabulary problem, “estar” is used with “calmados”. So, why is “ser” correct for “patiente”, and “estar” is correct for “calmado”? I feel like “to be patient”, in this example, is equally transitory as “to be calm”.
